You’re Sailin’ Without Me
They say “Cut a sailor, and he bleeds salt water!” Also known as The Sailor’s Retirement Song, this tune makes a proud proclamation - for a Salty Old Dog, there can be only one love greater than the sea.
We’re honoured that FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) on July 24th 2007 recognized “You’re Sailin’ Without Me” (writer Ed Saunders) as a FACTOR Professional Songwriter Award Winner (one of only 3 in Canada!)
Thanks to our friend and great vocalist Howard Mclean for helping us hit the “High C’s.”I Love You, But Then I Ain’t Too Bright
With tongue planted firmly in cheek, this comedy country original highlights the battle of the sexes. No matter how bright a guy might think he is, there’s nothing like a pretty face to make him into a dribbling idiot! This has become our most requested song for anniversaries – go figure! By the way, those percussion sounds? – It’s Brian beating his belly and Terry whacking his own face. Now that’s art!Sonny’s Dream
We were thrilled that Ron Hynes, one of Canada’s greatest story tellers agreed to us recording this poignant classic. How many of us East Coasters brewed over this difficult choice - will I move for the lure of adventure and better money, or will I stay home?Chug
Well, no subtle subtext here. “Chug” is a drinkin’ song! We were honored that “Father Saunders” joined in with his lively spoon and vocal support! In case I didn’t mention it, “Chug” is a drinkin’ song!Leaving of Liverpool
This lusty traditional toe-taper captures the emotion of a sailor readying to leave his home port. The sea is his work, so go he must; but once he makes his fortune he’ll return to marry his true love.
Me Love is Me Boat
If you spend any time around sailors or fishermen, you’ll grow to appreciate a light-hearted, suggestiveness to their language. “Me Love is Me Boat” with it’s pirate-like Arrr sing along became our most requested song during our “Tall Ships” performances this summer!Belly Yourself To The Bar, Gals
Many women have told us that this light-hearted romp bemoans the male species at his highest (or should that be lowest?) creative effort – “The pick-up line.” Blend in a few Newfoundland jigs, and “Belly” fills the dance floor!Banks Of The Ohio/Merry Blacksmith
If this has a bit of a “Soggy Bottom” feel, then we were successful. This southern traditional bluegrass classic has also been covered by many Celtic bands. So we thought we’d mix up the muds of the Mississippi and Bay of Fundy too! And to bring it home - the Merry Blacksmith Reel (which is more un-real in our case.)Old Black Toad
This percussive ditty usually gets the beer mugs-a-poundin’! The unique “toad” sounds are created on an unusual Vietnamese acoustic instrument – it’s a hollow wooden frog, featuring crocking ridges which you stroke with a stick. Ribbet!
